Calvin Clay Pope, 93, died August 30, 2018 in Onalaska, Tx at his residence. Calvin was born on July 29, 1925, in Waco, Tx, to Elva Katie (Warren) Pope and Concy Clay Pope.
Preceding Calvin in death: is his wife, Doylene Boddie Pope; brothers: Lloyd, Russell and Richard Pope; his parents; sisters: Iva Mae Stovall and Lila Knight; and recently, his sister-in-law, Marilyn Pope.
Survivors include: Calvin’s wife, Patricia Bowen Pope in Onalaska; daughter, Janet Charlene (Charlee) Taylor and husband Scott in Onalaska; brother, J.D. Pope in Segno; sister, Joy Marie Jones in Houston; sister-in-law, Angie Pope in Livingston; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Calvin graduated from Big Sandy High School in 1943. Sometime after that, because of his Christian neutrality and his strong belief in the sanctity of life, Calvin was sentenced to prison for refusing to support or participate in the Military. Upon his release and return home, he began his lifelong career as a heavy equipment operator.
Calvin worked heavy equipment until he was 86 years old when he had a heart attack and then shattered his hip, thus ending his hope of returning to work. The majority of his working years was with Windham and Sons in Livingston, first for Wyman Windham, then for James Windham and finally for Matt Murphy.
His greatest love was serving Jehovah God as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He found great joy in explaining the Bible truths, especially about God’s kingdom and what the kingdom will do for the earth.
Calvin was a family man and loved them with all his heart.
The Pope family would like to thank all who were so supportive during Calvin’s decline. We are deeply appreciative for all the loving assistance that we received: the medical staff, home health care and hospice, neighbors, friends, family, and most of all, the Livingston congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Services will be Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 10:00 AM at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness in Livingston.
