Horace James Miller was born in Port Lavaca, Texas on October 2, 1920 to James L. and Cartie E. Jones Miller. He is preceded in death by his daughter Linda Jane Barker and his granddaughter, Jeannie Davenport Nabors. Horace served his country during World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Force. He was a machine gunner on a B17 Bomber with the 358th Bomber Squadron. He made 35 missions in both the European and Pacific Theatres. When he returned he entered Westminster College in Tehuacana, Texas. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Education. Then he transferred to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas where he received a Masters in Science and Agriculture. He married Betty Ruth Guyton in May of 1948. To this union was born five daughters and one son. The children were: daughter Shirley who married Odell Jackson of Livingston, Texas, daughter Gloria Marie who married Phil Davenport of Garland, Texas, daughter Linda deceased who was married to Davis Barker of Jacksonville, Texas, daughter Becky who married Ricky Wilson of Livingston, Texas, daughter Susan who married Kurt Robertson of Alvin, Texas, and son Horace James, Jr. Jim who married Meredith Peebles of Livingston, Texas and now reside in Houston, Texas. Horace and Betty moved to Crockett, Texas in 1952. He shared that in 1953 while living near Crockett on the Youngblood farm, he and Betty came to know the Lord. He said two witnesses came by and talked to us about Jesus and the sweet by and by. That week they made a profession of faith and began the journey of growing their family in the Lord. Horace was transferred to Livingston in 1959. He worked for the Soil Conservation Service until his retirement in 1979. He served in the community as a Boy Scout leader and Cub Scout Leader. He was also a member of the Lions Club. Horace also served as President of NARFE National Association of Retired Employees for many years. Horace has served in several capacities at Central Baptist Church. He has been a member for over 50 years. He was ordained as a deacon in March of 1972. One of his joys was teaching the 5th grade boys. He taught that class for 23 years and saw many come to know the Lord. He was recently given the Deacon Emeritus award for his years of faithful service. He stressed the importance of teaching your children about the Lord. Horace was lovingly known as Buster by his family. Horace shared his life with Betty almost 65 years and raised his family to know the Lord. He showed that same love of the Lord to his 16 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. His grandchildren are: Melissa Sanderson, Stephanie Vincent, Kyle Jackson, Kenzie Jackson, Jeannie Nabors deceased, Katie Day, Mendie Triguero, Cody Davenport, Craig Barker, Meagan Martin, Michael Wilson, Julie Smitherman, Alex Wilson, Sarah Roberson, Trey Robertson, Jamie Villarreal. His great grandchildren are: Ryan Sanderson, Jackson Vincent, Avery Vincent, Hudson Vincent, Audrie Jackson, Bryanne Jackson, Neiman Day, Lucas Triguero, Madison Triguero, Grant Davenport, Sutter Davenport, Mckenna Barker, Dawson Barker, Bryleigh Barker, Brooklyn Barker, Eli Martin, Tyler Wilson, Austin Wilson, Gavin Smitherman, Brody Smitherman, Hannah Wilson, Kayleigh Wilson, Reese Roberson, and Caden Roberson.
