LivingstonAlvin Wayne Coleman, 87 of Livingston, Texas walked thru the doors of Heaven on May 3, 2014 in the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, Texas. Alvin was born on February 1, 1927 in Creston, Iowa, to George and Gladys Coleman. Alvin is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Joan Coleman of Livingston, Texas son and daughter inlaw, Douglas and Missy Coleman of Longview, Texas daughter and son inlaw, Robin and Denton Mason of Walnut Grove, Missouri son inlaw and daughter inlaw Wade Wayne and Donna Wilioughby of Gilmer, Texas brother and sister inlaw, Robert and Jeanine Coleman of Gilmer, Texas numerous grandchildren great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of wonderful friends. Alvin grew up in Creston, Iowa, Abita Springs, Louisiana and Longview, Texas. At 17 years of age he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, took his basic training in San Diego, California. Alvin served in World War II and the Korea War from 1944 to 1954. Both Alvin and his brother, Robert served on the USS Rushmore in 1951. In Longview, Texas, Alvin worked as a salesman for Gossetts Pie Shop, a TV technician for Brown TV and the biomedical Equipment Tech for Longview Regional Hospital. In 2009, Alvin was awarded a special recognition for all his services with the DTM, Toastmaster Hall of Fame, Area Governor of the Year. Alvin retired in 1992 after working for the Longview Regional Hospital for 12 years. Al and his wife Shirley began fulltime RVing in 2004 they were on the road for 8 years. The same year they became members of the Escapees RV Club and volunteers at the Escapees Care Center. Al was an Escapees Care Center volunteer from 2004 to 2010. In 2009, he received the Presidents Volunteer Service Award for volunteering more than 1,000 hours. Al attended the Northside Church of Christ when possible in Livingston, Texas he was a longtime member of the Escapees RV Club. Al was a resident at the Escapees Care Center in Livingston since September 2013. In 2006 Alvin Al made prearrangements to will his body to science with Science Care.
A Celebration of Als life will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, May 24, 2014 in the Escapees Care Center MultiPurpose room, 155 Care Center Drive, Livingston, Texas that is open to family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Als memory to Escapees Care Inc. 155 Care Center Drive, Livingston, Texas 77351
