JOHNNY RAY MOFFETT Johnny Ray Moffett was born January 17, 1942, in Livingston, Texas to Henry Oscar and Clara Thelma (Diamond) Moffett. He passed peacefully from this life on December 11, 2023, at his home in Houston, Texas at age 81. Johnny graduated from Goodrich High School where he was active in the FFA. Johnny excelled at sports. He played center on the basketball team, was co-captain of the football team, and was voted “Most Athletic.” Johnny’s love of sports was a constant in his life, and he continued to follow the exploits of the Goodrich High School football team, keeping tabs on them through the Polk County Enterprise newspaper. Johnny is a veteran of the United States Army, Company K, 2nd Battalion, 5th Brigade. He received his training at Fort Polk in Louisiana and served at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. Armed with a high school degree and sheer determination, Johnny became an engineer on the job, learning the advanced geometry and trigonometry necessary to rise through the ranks to become a Field Layout Engineer for W. S. Bellows Construction Corporation. He was responsible for the construction of many of the landmark buildings in downtown Houston and throughout Texas and Louisiana, including One Shell Plaza, the Wortham Center, Texas Children’s Hospital, the Hyatt Regency hotel and many more. Except for the stock market, Johnny never gambled, but it’s a sure bet the Isle of Capri Casino he built in Lake Charles, Louisiana was another project that met his high standards. After a successful career of over 30 years, Johnny retired from Bellows in April of 2003. He is survived by his children, Kevin Ray Moffett and his wife Susan, Alicia Lemée Moffett-Gonzalez and her husband Luis, and Kimberly Renée Moffett; brother James Olin Moffett and his wife Mary; sister Gloria Ann McCullough; grandchildren Taylor Anne Moffett and Joshua Ray Moffett, wife Lisa; as well as other family and friends. Johnny is preceded in death by his parents and siblings Halcomb Eugene, Robert Emerald, Henry Douglas, Garrison Hawkins, Mary Pearl, Charles Raymond, Betty Jane, Bobby Gene and Janet Ruth. Johnny’s family extends a special thanks to Heart to Heart Hospice for their support and care in helping Johnny pass peacefully at home in the presence of his family, as he had wished.
